Help think gnats killed my chicks!

I came home today and had (4) 6 week old chicks dead! Gnats were all over them. 4 more are down not looking so good but still alive. 4 look ok and are walking around drinking water. They were in a small pen waiting til this weekend to let them in with the bid birds. I took them out and put the alive birds in the big pen where they have some more room. Any advice on keeping gnats off of the birds? and helping the ones that dont look so good? I did put vanilla on their necks it seems to work for people. I dont know if it will help? Advice needed!!! Please.......

Did they get too hot?? Lack of fresh air??

No, the gnats got them. 5 out of 12 died. Got the rest of them in the big pen in the big coop. They are ok now. Had a neghibor that lost five big girls yesterday. (5 out of 6) I took his other one last night and put her in with my birds. She seemed ok last night and this morning.
