Good morning fellow chicken lovers. I purchased from what I thought was a straight run of chicks from a breeder, who only has purebred and popular heritage chickens. He is reputable. There's a little 'surprise' in the group that became apparent as the smallest male chick grew feathers. His wings appear striped and have brown and black (or dark grey) tips! He was supposed to be a Coronation Sussex chick. He is slightly smaller than the others but very friendly and brave! He is feathering up quicker than the others as well. I can see that the others currently appear to be as you'd expect for Coronation chicks at 1.5 weeks old. I'm wondering is he's a Suusex of any type at all (Light Sussex maybe?) or something completely different altogether? Please consider various pure breed chickens and if he looks like your chicks, please let me know the possible breed? He was professionally sexed BTW. All the rest look the same as each other- white wing feathers and yellow fuzz.

He looks exactly like the other chicks but for the black in the wings. I think he is a light Sussex, which could easily happen if the breeder is using light/Coronation Sussex splits in the breeding pens.

Yes, but it is coming through more brown feather ends than black- despite photos? The feather shafts are dull brown too- not grey opening to black?

I'm still trying to work this little guy out and I'm leaning towards a male Soeckled Sussex (wheaten based). What do people think? From what I have read, they feather up quicker too and this is definitely the case too. The colours coming through appear to be black, brown and white in the wing feathers. If not black, possibly dark grey.

More photos below: 2 weeks now

Hi all again! I still need help with this!
Although his colour is primarily black and white now, he has some non standard features which make me think he is crossed or a different breed.
He has quite large cheek puffs growing in a different direction to rest of feathers and his comb splits at the back.it is also thicker and fleshier, for want of a better word. He also has a punk feather "hair do" on top.
I have hatched Light Sussex before several times (as well as Coronation) and none have looked quite like this.
Any new thoughts now on Tiny Tim (who is not so tiny afterall now) 5.5 weeks?

He is the front runner in every photo and the only black and white. No feathers on legs or I would suspect a Brahma chick?

He’s a Sussex mix. Brahmas don’t have beards.

Thank you! I didn't even notice the beard! I willl need to talk to the breeder.

You may want to send a photo to the breeder. They should be able to tell if he's a true Coronation or not. A reputable breeder is also likely to correct any errors they might have made. It never hurts to ask ... nicely, of course!
