Help treating sour crop (and diarrhea)....saw vet but confused

Let us know what they say, hopefully they can tell more with the necropsy.

Just left vet with three of the hens. He’s thinking something GI (salmonella, ecoli, coccidiosis). 2 of the hens had smelly fluid coming from their beaks and I think it’s sour crop, he says maybe (smells like sour beer). Doing SMZ for about 3 weeks, also deworming them. Vet wants me to stop giving miconazole or acidified copper sulfate (Also said don’t do apple cider vinegar in the water right now) but I am kind of worried that the ones with the fluid coming out should be treated with something for that. Sigh. Hen that died is being sent off for necropsy and should hear something next week hopefully

Sorry, what is SMZ and what does it treat? Sorry you are going through this and I wish your hens a speedy recovery.

Did the first vet say cocci or coccidiosis? Cocci is a bacterial infection (staph and strep) and both antibiotics you were given will treat that. To many people are referring to coccidiosis as cocci giving the impression that they are the same thing when they aren't. Hopefully your chickens are better by now, just thought I'd throw that info out there for everyone.

@BigBlueHen53 SMZ is a sulfa drug. Whenever coccidiosis has progressed to enteritis a sulfa drug, along with Corid, is necessary to treat. I hope that helps

Sour Crop can be treated with an anti-fungal/yeast medication. Miconazole or Clotrimazole can be found in stores like Walmart.

Tylan is an antibiotic commonly used to treat respiratory infection. Some may use it to treat Enteritis.
I've never seen mention of using Tylan to treat Coccidiosis. A coccidiostat like Corid (Amprolium) is commonly used to treat Coccidia overload. Sulfa Antibiotics or Toltrazuril are a couple of other commonly used treatments for Coccidiosis.

Epsom salt can be used to flush the crop, it acts like a laxative, but follow up with an anti-fungal/yeast would be needed to treat the infection.
