Help...Trying to convert and old dairy barn into a future fowl area...

Her run is made of pvc piping which the hardware cloth and chicken wire are zip tied too. Basically it sits on top of bare dirt and only touched plastic, she even uses those plastic tent stakes to keep the wind from blowing it over. So yeah the incident was related to run design i am sure and probly her mis-understanding of how to properly put up a electric fence. i dont know how well it was electrified i never went in it or touched it, the thing scared the poo out of me i hate getting shocked, ive had the horse fence tag me on the back to many times.

There are a couple Amish farmers around the corner from me who have the solar electric netting around a chicken tractor. They rotate them all over their yards. I like that idea but on my road I have 4!neighbor dogs that run amuck and a hawk in my pines.

As much as my intention was to free range them... I am not sure at this point that I want to risk it.

I could do a wire or two before the outside run. Electrified barb wire or such.

I would hate to fry my beautiful chicken by accident! Yuck!

If you decide to run electric, turn it off when they free range. My chickens will frequently bump, peck, and walk against the fence if they get scared or forget how to get back in. Really will not protect them if they are outside of it anyways.

...when you're cutting through and than you get stuck straddling the fence...

Her fencing construction was the perfect storm.
mhmm...or stand up just a touch to soon.....or "ouch i didnt think the wire was THAT high" the thigh is about the worst for me lol.

EDITED: As far as her fencing, when i mentioned the same concerns to her after the fact her reply was "Well i just didnt want anything to rust or corrode"

Do you mean with the electricity? How is that going to prevent deterioration?

Basically it comes down to trying to make the chickens so safe she killed them. Her entire flock ended up dying from one thing or another over about a year and a half. The entire flock being 12 birds.
