Doesn't seem to have any injury or bumblefoot. Although the hick seems slightly swollen. Sneezes a very little bit now and then but they all kind of make a sneezing sound when they eat but not excessively at all. They're broadbrested bronze I ordered from a hatchery. I'm feeling 24% starter. Bedding kept very clean and dry. Birds aren't vaccinated I don't think. The affected bird doesn't like to put weight on the leg. Lays a lot and screeches when you pick him up like it hurts. And then he'll pant when you put him back which confirms my suspicion of pain. He has decreased appetite but is eating and drinking some. Droops wing on side of body that leg seems to hurt. Looks a tad twisted but nothing obvious. Help! They're pets. And imprinted. I'm attached to them as much as they are me. I don't know what to do. It's been years since I've had turkeys.

It is most likely perosis caused by improper feed. Turkeys need a high protein starter feed, not just because of the higher percentage of protein but also because of the higher levels of lysine, methionine and niacin. The lack of sufficient niacin will cause perosis especially in broad breasted poults that grow really fast.

Thanks so much. I am feeding them dumdor chick starter at 24%. Is that not enough?

Dumor chick starter is not turkey starter. It not only does not have the amount of protein they need and contains much less than optimal amounts of lysine, methionine and niacin. The problem with your poult is caused by an insufficient amount of niacin in the feed.

I feed my poults a 28% protein turkey/gamebird starter that contains the proper amount of lysine, methionine and niacin. My poults do not develop leg problems.

Thanks so so much. I’m on it. I’m on my way to a mill. TSC told me that this is sufficient for poults. I should’ve known better. It’s the highest protein they had in.

If his leg were disclocated he wouldn’t be able to bend it right? What can I do about it now?

You can palpate the joint to see if the tendon is still in place. If it has slipped out of place you can maneuver it back in place and then wrap it to keep it there. In the meantime you can get a good vitamin B complex and dissolve half a capsule in one gallon of water. This has to be made fresh daily.

Good luck.

I got the vitamin b complex. Can my other birds get that too?
