If you calculate that Tylan 50 dosage correctly, it should be very apparent even by day 2. I have a dosage chart worked out in Excel for anyone who would like one. I used my avian vet's dosage, Tylan 50 at 30 mg/kg. I have space in the spreadsheet for you to type in your own birds' weight as well and it will automatically calculate in ml (cc) and insulin units, and I am happy to e-mail to anyone interested.

Feel free to correct my math, etc. if you find errors.

My bantams (grown) tend to be around 1.75 lbs. I highly recommend getting an accurate scale. We bought a kitchen scale when I had chicks, and it works great for them.

The dosage for tylosin (Tylan) for birds according to Merck is as follows:

Tylan50's 1 ml has 50 mg with a dosage of 35mg per 1 kg caged bird weight, according to Merck. 1kg=2 lbs
35 mg = 2 lbs bird dosage; 50 mg is 143% of 35mg, so 1 ml treats a 2.86 pound bird. 1 cc = 1 ml so 1/2 cc treats a 1.43 pound bird, 1 cc treats a nearly 3 pound bird, etc.

Depending on the weight of the bird, for three days, I'd treat as above. The injection is in the breast muscle. Unfortunately this medicine burns, so move the shot each time to a new spot in the muscle.

Ok that makes sense my problem is that needle. Where do i fill it to? U think a diebetic sister could tell me these things. She looked at me crazy. She couldnt tell me what each line was, SCARY. Thank you all so much for ur help. I will take the needle to the CVS and have the pharmacist explain the needle then laugh at me. Lol

That's because she doses herself in Units of insulin, not cc's.

ETA -- The pharmacist will not laugh. They will be glad to explain it.

Can you possibly pop over to a feedstore tomorrow? Call first - they usually have 3cc syringes available for dog/cat use. They generally come with a 20gauge or 25 gauge needle, which is easier to put through chickens' tough skin.

Ok, i am pretty sure this needle is 1/2 a cc. She uses these cause the needle is small and she is 6 shots a day. So i gave it to little only .05 instead of .25. It is a small bird so 1/4 sounds right with those weight calculations. Still gonna go to CVS. Feed store only had horse needles.
