In January this year we had a rooster walk up our driveway and decide to stay. We live in what most folks would say is the country, with our nearest neighbors a half a mile away so we were somewhat surprised. We had never had chickens and really did not know what to expect, but Roo quickly captured our hearts. He accompanied us everywhere, always wanted to be near us, and comment on our activities. Eventually he liked to be held and have his eyebrows rubbed. My wife and I were in love. After a while we decided that Roo needed a family of his own and decided to get him some hens. Because of the pandemic, it was difficult to get started pullets (we were not ready to start with chicks), but eventually we had an order in with a hatchery for some buff Orpingtons. Over a month my daughter and I built a coop though Roo always insisted on sleeping beneath our sunroom so that we would be sure to know when it was 3:30, 4:00, 4:30 etc. A couple of weeks back the hens arrived. Roo was a bit too interested so we were keeping them penned up separately for awhile to give them some time to get acquainted. A few nights back a bear took our Roo...We are devastated. I would never had thought I could feel such grief and loss for a chicken.
I want what would have been Roos flock to have a rooster, and I would like to see if we can find the same breed. It seems silly I know. He would no doubt be different in other ways but I want to somehow try. As best as my research has shown he was probably a sexed-linked gold or brown, but I cannot be sure. Any help would be appreciated.
