Hi all!
We bought some new ladies to add to our flock and start my daughter’s new flock. Unfortunately, we think we ended up with birds that we didn’t choose. I’m pretty sure our Sapphire Splashes are Sapphire Gems. But we have others we aren’t sure of and I’d like some input on what we have.
Here’s some pics. They’re 3 months old now. Sorry, they weren’t real cooperative for me to get pics. We thought we were getting a Diamond Duchess, two Ameraucana, an Easter Egger, and a Cuckoo Maran. We know we got the Lavender Orpington (one of the two was a cockerel that found a good home Saturday), and two Golden Laced Wyandottes. And two that ended up being the Sapphire Gems.
I’d be most disappointed if the Duchess and the Ameraucanas aren’t what we ended up with since I paid more intending to get those specifically. It seems our FFAH was not monitoring people with the chicks. And the Sapphires were mislabeled, but I can live with that.
There are other FFAH’s elsewhere, doubt we’d go to the same store again. Last time we bought chicks there they were very attentive and not allowing people to just grab them and run around. This time the situation was a bit hectic.
The cockerel was most likely just the risk we all take that they’re correctly sexed. He’s been named “Toothless” by the family and has a lovely flock to protect. His predecessor was sadly killed by a predator just a few days ago while protecting his flock. The timing couldn’t have been better for us to discover a roo in the mix, though catching which one was the roo for sure was a challenge. LOL. Never having had one, I wasn’t 100% on which one he was until I saw him crow. They’ve told us he took to the flock instantly and settled in without a peep. Such a sweet little guy.
Of course, our hens were QUITE irate and attacked my partner when he went to fill their water later.
He came out with a couple of scratches. I think they were all afraid they’d be the next to “disappear into the stew pot”.
