One of my silkies has her eye matted shut and it is now swollen. There is a foul odor around her head and all the other girls smell the same. No matter how often I bathe them, that smell stays. They are sneezing and still have mucus leaking from their nares. They sound like there is some rattling in their chest when they are breathing. I think I am dealing with Coryza based on some quick research. What can I do to help treat them. No vets in the area will see chickens, nearest vet that will is 3 hours away. I do however have some Tylan powder. What can I do? I know that the eye matting shut is conjunctivitis and we used to have erythromycin on hand all the time when my grandma was still working (she's a retired L&D RN). I have Terramycin, can I use that on the swollen eye? Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you all for your time.

You can clean out the gunk in the eyes with saline or eye wash and QTips. Use a warm wet compress to the eye to soak off any crust or stuck together eyes. Then use the Terramycin eye ointment twice daily. Coryza is a lifelong respiratory disease. It is contagious to other birds, and they will likely all become infected if added to the flock. Coryza symptoms may respond to sulfa antibiotics such as Sulfadimethoxine or SMZ-TMP (bactrim, sulfatrim.) Since coryza only remains alive for several days after birds are removed, some would consider culling sick birds and starting over with healthy chicks from a hatchery a month or two later. Have you added any new birds to your flock recently that may have been a carrier, but did not show symptoms? Coryza symptoms may keep coming back in the future, since it is never cured. Sorry that you are dealing with this. Here is some reading about coryza:
