Help! What are they doing?!?!

They are not necessarily roos. My girls do this as well. They will run towards one another and puff up their neck feathers for a stare down. Usually one will back down, but if not, the braver one give the other a swift pecking. Sounds like they are establishing a pecking order. My silkies seem a lot less likely to fight like this than my other breeds. My hen Lorraine goes to take a peck at one of the other newer girls, and she sometimes misses

I am so glad to find this thread and especially the earlier post about the girls starting out younger with establishing the pecking order. Just today I took my 8 babies to their coop & run for the very first time and two of them began the chest thumping thing. One of the perps was my Silkie who is the oldest at 10 weeks, the other an Ameraucana who is a couple of weeks younger. I'm pretty sure the Ameraucana is a girl but the jury's still out on the Silkie. The Silkie (Egberta) is the only one I have and I can't have roos so is it safe to assume they are both girls?
