Help! what breeds are these hens??

mbleily .... thanks so much for your input. I see on your site you have/had a chick that looks like my mystery chick and some hatchery said it was a Blue Andalusian too. Wondering if these hatcheries just zap any name on something... rofl

The black no. 3 hen with the dots looks nothing like my no. 2 photo Blue Andalusian....not even in build. Someone else said it looked like MM's Andalusians but it certainly is not the same species as my other one. It is a smaller, much more compact hen...similar in build to the totally black one. Matter of fact it looks almost exactly like what you were thinking your Marans are. Did you find out if they definitely were Marans?

My Blue Andalusian (no. 2) is a taller, much more rangy bird. I cannot see how they can be the same species...but then again I thought Ameraucanas and EE's were the same.

Ok I see what the problem is. I was talking about the pictures in the second group of pictures that you posted and you are saying that that was your mystery chick. LOL I am sorry I was confused I guess. My white splash pullet and a black pullet I have looks like that one....and the white one was what I was told was the Andalusian. the body is very much the same as your mystery.
This is what she looked like at 8 weeks She doesn't have much gray feathers but a few scattered around. she is the one in the foreground left.

here she is a little younger.

Ok I now see the one you are thinking is like my marans and yes they turned out to bee marans. they have white legs and feet. There is some dark down the front of the legs but the rest is white.

I am brain dead today, should have figured that out. Yes my mystery chick looks almost exactly like a younger version of yours and he is kinda rangy already, long legs, and has black feathers coming out on his neck, shoulders and back. I would be thrilled if he is an Andalusian roo as I have that beautiful Blue Andalusian hen.

And I am still thinking my other blk/wht. hen looks very similar to your Marans, a little more black but she is only about 4 1/2 months old. She has light legs, not yellow, with a faint hint of black down the fronts. Will just have to wait and see I suppose. So many different breeds....

Where did you get your birds? I got mine from Meyers and so they are not show birds and don't have all the true markings. I guess they are called utility birds. which is fine for me. I will now show them just want to have eggs and watch them play. LOL
I can't tell by your picture that much but if her legs are lite and the spots are not bars you could have a Maran. I thought mine where Barred rocks for a long time. I finally said wait a min. Those aren't bars they are more like spots....

I don't know what the others are, but #5 looks like our red sex-link. Excellent egg layers. RIR's are darker and I don't believe they have any white.

Nice bunch of birds though - congrats!!!

They are spots, almost like polka dots, not like a Barred Rock..and she is much blacker with a different face.

I got these hens as young chicks, along with some Cornish X's, from a neighbor down the street that got them from MM and couldn't keep them. Even got a black Cochin Frizzle banty hen in the group...sooooo adorable.

I have had a bunch of mixed layers for years, mostly EE's, White Rocks and Barreds. Was surprised at all the different breeds of chickens. Don't know where to put her, the other hens want to use her for a pillow.

I think the 2 brown and white ones are sex links too.

1. Silver Spangled Hamburg
2. Blue Andalusian (probably splash)
3. & 4. Mottled Java or Anacona ? Her build isn't really right for the Java...
5. Gold Sex-link ? Definitely a Sex-link...she'll be a good layer I'm sure
6. Black Australorp or Black Java ? Build isn't really right for the Java either...

If you know what hatchery they came from we might be able to narrow it down to at what they offer in their 'special' you got.

The started bird on the green towel looks like a Blue Andalusian rooster to me. He also looks like a splash. Which means both of the birds have both copies of the Blue gene. So all of their babies will be 100% splash. If I'm wrong on their color then they may throw blue, black, and splash babies...

WaaaHooo! Thanks so much for all who posted. I now know what breed my hens and mystery roo are and am extremely happy to have them as additions to my flock.

What great people on this great site!
