Hi All,
This is such a great forum, and there are so many knowledgeable chicken folks out there. I need you guys to tell me what is wrong with the little chicks beak. My sons were so excited to find a Golden laced Polish chick, they bought this little chick, and I was not around to inspect it. When they got home it's nose looked funny. After I cleaned it up with sterile water, it looks like the top part of the beak is missing. I put a little dabble of betadine on it. Any ideas, thoughts on this? I have never seen this before. Will it heal, is it a disease? Help please, and thanks for any advice!

Where did they get it from? has it gotten worse?
How long have you had the little guy.
My First instinct (cause in my be an animal attack, but does not appear to have other damage) is that it may be a FUNGAL infection). Keep the little guy isolated and watch the other birds, to make sure they show no signs. I would suggest a fungicide (topical and in its water). If it is not a fungal in fection , the fungicide will not hurt him... so i think it is a good place to start.
Make sure that he keeps eating to keep it strength up. you can cook eggs up and put buttermilk with some of his feed in it. keep the seed he can eat deep so if he has troubles eating, he can kind of "scoop" the food up.
Also using ACV (apple cider vinegar ) in the water may help a bit too. it has lots of benefits that the poor guy could use.
Please provide a little more info (questions above)...and Hope this helps out a bit.
Keep us posted...Best Wishes and God Bless,
Laura

IT WILL HEAL LOOK LIKE SOMETHING BAD MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED NOT SURE BUT THEIR BEAK I THINK MAY GROW BACK HOPEFULLY OR IT WILLJUST ADJUST IT SELF BUT HEEF IT SAFE IT CAN GET BADLY HURT BY THE OTHERS

Thanks for the input. As far as answers to the 1st couple of question, I have no idea. They were told by the gentleman selling them that the chick was one week old. I suspect 2-3 weeks based on the wing growth. We have only had the chick for an hour or so. It has had some sugar water to drink. What is a good fungicide to use?
