Help! What is wrong? Egg bound?

Are her eggs normally hard or has she been laying soft-shell/shell-less eggs?

I'm wondering if she is trying to expel a soft shell egg or she may still have some yolk/whites that she is trying to get out. I have a girl that does this occasionally.

Provide her with some poultry vitamins and extra calcium - Poultry Nutri-Drench if you have it (1cc per 3lbs). Crush a TUMS and sprinkle it over a scrambled egg. See if she will eat the egg with calcium and drip some of the vitamins on the egg. Do your best to get her hydrated.

Sometimes a soak may help, but if it stresses her, then leave it off for a while.

To answer your question - ""Inside the vent...does it split up and down? It seems like I can only go downish"" Yes, it does somewhat make a split - up would be the oviduct and down is the intestines.

Thank you for replying...No we haven't had a soft shell in a while and none recently. I am apparently unprepared in terms of a chicken first aid kit because I don't believe I have any chicken vitamins. I had some when they were babies, but I can't seem to locate it. Dang, I haven't had any issues with them this past year, and the last couple of days three of them have had some sort of issue, this one being the most serious. I'm sure the heat is not helping.

I have been giving her some calcium carbonate, though she is not very interested in eating anything. I'll continue to try to hydrate her.

I did talk to an emergency vet with some chicken experience, and she thought it best to keep her in the dog crate hospital inside overnight, and call her if things got worse. Right before I brought her inside she did seem more interested in walking around. I'll get some preparation H for her and give her a little vaseline lube then see how she does I guess.

Thank you.

It's not looking great. I've been getting up to spoon feed her water, which she will drink small amounts of. She will not eat any of her favorite foods so it's hard to get her to ingest Olive oil. I'm not feeling great about force feeding her.

I just gave her a second warm Epsom salt bath. She relaxed more this time/has less will to fight...massaged her abdomen which she seemed to like. More preparation h and Vaseline, then put her in the crate with a towel wrapped around a heating pad. She won't lie down though, and just stays in that low standing/squatting position. She is pooping more than just water now. I'll get up again to give her water and if she's still with us in the morning then maybe the vet can help.

I'm sorry to hear she is not improving.
Can you take her to a vet?

Don't stress yourself out, you are doing the best you can. If she won't eat that is ok, just keep the fluids going like have.

Having the standing/squatting position sounds like she is still trying to pass an egg or she may have a reproductive/internal laying disorder like Egg Yolk Peritonitis, cancer, tumors or Ascites.

After a long night I am very happy to report that this morning I found a much happier chicken with two eggs in her crate.

They were soft shelled so I will work today on getting her some vitamins and calcium drops as soon as the stores are open. We have just been giving them their shells back to them and it seemed to have been working, but maybe we need to start supplementing with oyster shells.

I guess I will keep her isolated until she passes another one to make sure she doesn't have trouble.

Thank you all for your help!!

OH GREAT!!!!

I'm so glad you were able to help her get this eggs out!
Good job!

She seems fine! She didn't lay another egg but she was so chipper mid day I decided to let her out with her sisters. She seems fine, energetic. She looks hot, but they all do, because it is! She definitely has access to water, and trying to give them water filled treats too. I'm not sure if the second egg would have been today's, or from two days ago if that makes sense, but I'll make sure she lays something tomorrow and keep an eye on her.

Unfortunately no where in town sells vitamins or calcium drops, so I just had to do the oyster shell and see what happens. I'm traveling next town over for work tomorrow so will see what I can find there

Thanks for asking!

I am very happy to hear that!
