So this Araucana chick of mine has had odd constipation problems for days no, where it tries to poop, but not much comes out, and its vent gets really big. After a while its whole butt end was nasty looking, and it would often peck at it.

Now, the vent is just one huge abcess. It is like a large sac of fluid or something inside. . . Is this a prolapse? What is it, and what can I do?!

The chick is 1 week old, and has been in a large brooder with almost 40 other chicks, on pine shavings bedding and medicated chick starter.

Looks like it could be prolapse. You can try lubing it up with some mineral oil and push it back in. It may heal okay if it goes back in. Definitely keep this one away from the others so it has a chance of healing. If it stays with the others, they will peck it to death.

Well, turns out it wasn't a prolapse, but a huge sac of fluid or something, perhaps an infection? right above the vent. When we lubed it and gently tried pushing it back in a with a Q-Tip, it finally sort of "deflated" and plenty of liquid came out the vent. In the end, the vent was "hooded" with a small flap of skin, and so we put a Vaseline-type stuff around the vent to prevent burning. It's been a day now, and the chick seems kinda fine. The redness has gone down at least.

I'd love to know what it was, how it happened, and such forth - Because this Araucana is probably my only white chick, and has beautifully presented tufts.
