Hi! I have six rhode island reds and yesterday i heard one of them...whistling? Now three are doing it. Any ideas?
I tried to add a video of the sound but cannot sadly.

I never heard it until yesterday. It sounds almost as if thier throats are hoarse
She sounds perfectly normal to me. I don't hear any whistling in the video.
I hear if you feed them whistle berries (beans), it will make them whistle, from the other end. :lau:gig

I'm by no means an expert - I'm very much a chicken newbie too. However, my girls make this noise all the time. They never used to when they were younger, but they've grown into it.

For my girls it's usually a cry they make when they get mildly uncomfortable/unsure. Kind of like "uuuuuuuh I dunno 'bout this. Guys? Guys?" And then their vocalization will change depending on what they figure out about the situation while they're in "whistling" mode :p

Kinda like a chicken version of "uhm, like... Uh..." when giving a public speech :lau

Your pullets are now mature, and will be laying soon. This is a time when you will normally hear new sounds coming from them during the day. They vocalize, and chat with each other, and do the egg sound after they or another lay an egg. Some will get downright noisy. I had an ancona hen who used to spend 2 hours every morning stomping around the coop screaming at the other hens. She made more noise than any rooster could ever do. I have always enjoyed when the hens talk to each orhter or chatter when going about their day. I can usually recognize the voice from some of my girls before I see them.
