HELP - WILL MY NEW RESCUE ROOSTER EVER BE NORMAL?

Where to start....
My angry Hen went Broody so instead of her sitting on a golf ball for 21 days thought I'd go to the local egg
farm and see if I could get a fertilized egg....

had no luck with that but the farmer gave us 1.5 yr old
white Rooster....he's was just about to go meat.....
He is absolutely beautiful but.....

His comb is a comb-over (my daughter thought he had a red flower on his head cuz it looks like an upside down tulip)
He didn't understand he could go further than a 1 x 1 spot
-- My chickens have the Hilton for a coop and he just stood in one spot for the entire first day we had him...
He stared at me when I offered him oatmeal and blueberries and didn't make a noise
His top part of his beak tip seems to be gone too


The chicks run all around free range and I think he's never touched another chicken before

He seems to have no clue about what he's "supposed" to do with the ladies even thou they fluff their feathers in his face....

He's just getting good at walking and actually jumped up onto the perch inside instead of sleeping on the floor....

wondering if anyone knows why he seems so....strange?

I'm thinking he's been caged for 1.5 years and just doesn't have a clue what to do with himself.....
I'm hoping his legs will get stronger everyday and he'll start having some fun....

He did eat the entire bowl of oatmeal I put out this morning thou

I'm at work and just wanna be home with him.....
My heart is breaking

Poor thing has culture shock. It will take a few days for him to figure out that he can move around. Right now he needs some loving and care! Just be patient.....he's been in "jail" his whole life. It take time to figure out what to do with your life when your are released!
Glad you saved him and he has a good home now.

Give him some time, he'll be fine.
I rescued three little chics awhile back(one died shortly after) they were dumped in a field. Anyways, for the longest time they just didn't act like normal chics.Now they are just fine they are both roos.

just my luck!
Pretty soon that roo will come around, poor thing. I think it's so great you saved him.

OK ladies...
finally I think he's looking pretty handsome for photos so....

I've had "Kernel" for a bit now,
He can walk (strut) fairly sturdy
He can jump up onto the roost no problem
He loves blueberries....

and he still falls asleep on my lap when I pet him.....

Can one actually love a chicken this much?

I think I'm nuts....

I was just looking at a thread on chickens that had been rescued from large scale egg producers. See this link:

These hens have combs like your rooster. If you read through the posts, you'll see one that indicated chickens that are kept in overheated conditions will develop large pale combs because they are heat dissapators.

After being caged 1.5 years, he sounds like his past may have been similar to the rescued hens.

He's beautiful. I doubt that he's a rescued egg layer breeder because his feathers are far too nice to have been caged with several hens. However, he could have been caged in a got metal shed for showing purposes. I bought some btw japs one time that had never been out of their cage and his behavior is very similar to theirs. The extra large comb makes me think it was a very hot shed. Whatever, nice save!!

Kernels humungous floppy cone was very pale pink when I got him .... the farmer said he had been in his own cage to keep him away from ladies since its an egg farm.
Probably why his feathers were fairly full.

My daughter calls it his flower and my husband calls him
salami head

I'm not sure why they would have kept him around so long - by himself.
I don't think they even used him for breeding cuz he kept having panic attacks when the ladies would look at him.

Regardless he's the sweetest Rooster in the entire world.
