These babies are 6 weeks old. The first baby is a Welsummer (I think). We've had problems with it picking and eating feathers. It's been suggested that maybe it's a boy because of this behavior.

I am fairly certain this next baby is an EE (I had a hard time telling the EE's and Welsummers apart as new chicks).

Lastly, I am fairly certain that this polish is a boy, but would like others opinions. I am bummed. I ordered 3 polish for our backyard flock and 2 died immediately upon arrival and now the last one is (probably) a boy. *sigh*

Thanks in advance for any help!

the feather eating is due to insufficient protein

increase the protein in feed

I have read that about the protein so I've been giving them (15 chicks) a can of tuna every other day. It has gotten better (he picked the polish until he was bleeding a few weeks ago!) so maybe it's just a process. Now he just walks around pulling at one feather on each chick (sometimes even dragging the chick a couple of feet!) and if the feather comes out he'll eat it. No more blood, though. There is one Marans that will turn around and peck him when he pulls it's feathers and the polish will stalk him around their area and peck him when he pulls someone else's feathers! It's pretty comical to watch.

I am SO glad to hear the EE is a girl! She's my 9 year old's favorite, named Cookie. :)
