Yesterday I picked up 2 roosters...1 a red and the other a silkie....they were great the day I got them. My kids could pet them and I they were nice and friendly. The silkie went missing overnite(they are just free roaming about my backyard). The morning whhile I was at work the red was nice, walked down the street by the side of wife and kids. No problems at all. This afternoon/evening the silkie came back and now the red is being mean...is it because there is 2 roos? They are the only 2 I have...no hens. Any ideas? Is it because he is trying to be the "LEADER". Should I only have 1?

I'm just curious - why would you have a rooster and no hens? I would get some hens, but you may need to re-home one of the roosters - i'm not sure what the ration of roosters to hens should be but I am pretty confident it is not 2:0!

If they are just loose in the yard with no safe place to sleep at night then it's highly likely you'll be down to one, maybe none, very soon anyway. Chickens are defenseless at night and easily taken down by dogs or other predators during the day. If you really want to keep these birds then I'd build them a coop, rehome one of the roo's and get a few hens for the other.

Roosters really aren't meant to be pets. They may have been docile from the move and are now showing their true colors. Please don't leave your children with them, they're hormonal and territorial and will be out to establish dominance and your kids will be prime targets.
