There are more than one cross to get a Black Sex-link.
Most any color Male over a Barred Hen will give you a Black Sex-link.
Example-
Rhode Island Red rooster over a Barred hen
Partridge Rock rooster over a Barred hen
Columbian Wyandotte rooster over a Barred hen
Silver Ameraucana rooster over a Barred hen

Also a Red Sex-link male over a Barred hen will give you a Black Sex-link offspring.
I have did this cross and work well.
Gold Duck-wing rooster over a Silver Duck-wing then crossed a Golden Duck-wing male F1 offspring to a Barred hen and all F2 were Sex-link.
Males - Black w/White spot on head (and turned out Barred Silver Duck-wings) Females - Solid Black

You have? Really?! Was the roo a typical Red Sexlink rooster color (white/yellow/red shoulders)? What did the chicks look like when you crossed him on your Barred Rocks? (I assume he threw half black sexlinks and half white sexlinks, but wanna double-check!

I love my Red Sexlink hens... They are awesome layers of huge brown eggs. If I could get sexlinks out of a RSL x BR cross... Ought to make some REALLY good layers!

Is'nt he a Birchen?

Last edited:
Birchen is specifically E^R/E^R crowwing. That male, like many other E/E extended x Duckwing, Wheaten, Partridge, etc - Is a good mockery of Birchen but not actually Birchen.

Yes, you want a Barred hen.
You can use either a Barred Rock, Dominique, Barred Holland, or Cuckoo Maran any one will work.

Is'nt he a Birchen?

No, he would be "mock" Birchen but not a Birchen by Genetics. Both parents were Duck-wing.
