Help with Cast iron stock pot.

Well....I guess I will just have to fry some bacon in it tomorrow, and cook up a big old pot of green beans and taters. "sigh" My DIL is into the new and shiney looking stuff. I told my son..and he said when he told her, she cried and said how sorry she was. Its not a big deal...well...not really. Something I can fix...with a little work. I told her its ok...and explained the importance of the " black" in the bottom...and how one day, it will be hers.
Here is the old pot. I also use it for pot roasts. Brown them on the stovetop...in a little oil...then add broth and slow cook the roast in it all day. I just love this old pot.

Hi Deb - sorry to hear about your pot but you'll get it seasoned back in due time. I had something similar happen but it was to my new, expensive heavy gourmet non-stick baking pans. My stepfather, during a holiday visit, scrubbed them with wire brushes till he got off "all that black coating". In this case, no such thing as re-seasoning them - they were trash - no more non-stick surface. Like your DIL he was quite proud of himself.

Ouch. That is one clean pot. bless her heart.

With the knob on the lid - does it come off? It looks to be a composite material? If it comes off take it off.

Grease the pot up real good and the lid but only if that knob comes off, if not set the lid aside I don't suggest this for that piece.

Take the pot part and build yourself a nice big fire, in the bbq or in the fireplace or even a dug out place in the yard. Once everything is nice and red and burning with intense heat put that pot on the fire. Let it burn a while. Watch it, roll it over as needed. leave it sit to the side when you are finished and let it cool until cold. Wash, rub with a little oil and try cooking in it.

My grandma always seasoned her cast iron on an open fire. She has the best frying pans ever. I have always done mine like hers.

Oh, that's really bad! I finally got my first cast iron pan and I'm really really picky. I hide it from anybody who might get near it with soap and water.

Lordy, what a clean pot. After you finish crying, follow prissys advice. I found an old cast iron skillet at a yard sale. It was all rusty and horrible looking. I brought it home, cleaned up the rust while DH started a fire out back. We decided that was a good day to clean up all the limbs and leaves in the back yard. After it cooled down we oiled it and then seasoned it on the grill a couple of times.
It is now the cornbread pan. Better than non stick cookware.

I always re-season my iron skillets when I can with bacon grease (I know) but it works ...after a gentle washing in the sink I turn on a stove burner and place the skillet til it drys from the heat and then rub good old bacon grease on it and rub the excess off with a paper towel a few times....
