We have clutch of semi-wild chicks living in our front yard. One of the chicks had a large clump of droppings stuck to his bottom. Thanks to this site I learned that I had to remove it with a warm wash cloth or the chick could die. However now his rectum is a little bloody. I didn't pull on the clump, I simply waited until it got soft and removed it. Is the blood normal? Should I separate him from the rest of the chicks? Is there anything else I should do to make sure he is okay? Keep in mind that I've never raised chickens, the mother hen simply decided to raise her chicks in my yard, so any advice, related or not, would be greatly appreciated.

I believe this is all normal, well i am not very experienced but i know enough to tell you that you may have damaged his rectum. Baby chicks have very delicate be-hinds. To help him feel more confortable you can wet a towel and place it on his rectum, which may soothe him. If you have any questions you can message me anytime. It should heal over time. I don't believe you will have to separate him from the rest of the flock because it is not a disease so it wont cause much damage. But if the others members of the flock seem to be bothering him you should separate him to somewhere else and give him other necessary care. You may want to bring him inside, to a nice quiet area. To get more information you should go on the forum and learn more about chickens. There is really good advice and comments on this site.

good luck!

A little smear of vasiline maybe after makeing shure is bum is clean. I think the only thing I would worry about is the other chicks pecking at it they peck anything thats red and will sometimes kill another chick if it has a sore or bleeding spot. GOod luck keep us posted

I checked on the chick again today. His anus is again plugged up and now it's also swollen. I tried to clean him off as best I could but it's still plugged and swollen. Is there anything I can do for him?

I believe you should repeat the process i said above. Stickey butt is a sign of stress. Is there anything that may be stressing out? Was he shipped to you?
