So, I learned about chicken math when i was sure i was only getting 4 chickens, and i now have 7 chicks! I already need to expand my coop, how many chickens should I plan for? I don't know too much about chicken math, is there a formula, or should you just plan to end up with 3 or 4 more chickens than you expect?

LOL, I don't know! But plans do have a tendency to expand! I started out just wanting a few Serama. I built my incubator, then discovered the grocery store hatching eggs thread, so being that it was a super cheap way to try out my incubator, we hatched some White Leghorn chicks, which I'm making a seprate coop for! I'm really looking forward to their eggs! I still plan on seramas, but am also planning to get more hens to go with the leghorns for more eggs (really want Brabants) and finally, I have a low fenced in section of the backyard with a huge tree spanning overhead, and think it would be a great place for a few Silkie hens to hang out, LOL. So I'm gonna have ta build 3 coops! I'm only on the first coop, big enough for 8 hens but have only hatched out 5, and who knows how many are hens! ( I hope at least 2!). So, yah, they multiply fast! LOL

Ha! Ha! I started with 10 & said I'd never get a roo. LOL I now have 7 pens & over 200 birds not all chickens. I also have 5 roos. Think I'll probably get rid of 1 maybe two roo's. I think I'm an honor student in chicken math.

3 or 4 may not b a good estimate--

I thought that I would start out with 12 chicks. The feed store didn't have them when they said they would, so I bought 5 chicks from another feed store. Then the first feed store called. So I picked up the dozen from them. That put me at 17, so time to start building a coop! We built the coop and they liked it. I got impatient for eggs, so I bought 3 EE hens. Then I found out that both my BOs are roosters, so of course I needed some BO pullets for them, right?

So I went to buy 2 BO hens, and came home with 5 hens. I told my husband that the guy I bought them from was selling his coop, too. When I went to pick up the coop, the guy offered me a good deal on his remaining 5 hens and a roo.
I lost one of the BAs to a hawk in June, and an EE past away 2 weeks ago, so right now I'm at 29 total. Already planning to build a couple more coops to separate my breeds. I think hubby's getting wise to my "chicken math" though, and he knows that more coops means more chickens, not just more room for the ones we already have!

theres not a set formula. Plan to build the coop as big as you can afford. I wanted around 7 hens and 1 roo. Well I got 6 chicks, 3 turned out to be roos. So i got 3 more now i'm at 9. I only wanted 2 more but had to have the SLW ,the BCM , and at least 1 EE. then i see a BLRW. Oh my GOD!!!!! I want atleast one of them , which means i'll probably get 3. Do you see how it happens? Unless your a very strong willed person. I mean VERY STRONG WILLED. You'll probably get at least 5 more than you planned to. Due to unwanted roos, deciding you want another breed. Or you may decide you want a heritage breed, the possibilities are endless.
