Help with design of coop

I'm so glad you posted this thread, this is exactly what I'm thinking of doing. In my head I had the left side of the shed as the coop, the back right corner a brooder area and the front right be storage. Do you have a single door or a double door? The shed I'm looking at is 10 x 12 and the door will be on the 12' side. It comes standard with double doors but I'm thinking about having it only be a single door. I'm going to add windows to the ends as high up toward the top as they can put them. Your drawings made me look at it in a whole new light!

Nice! This is pretty much the same as mine, but your shed is all shiny and new! Yes, we have the double doors, I think it will work out well because they are so narrow. Please post pics of your progress. It will be cool to see how these turn out! Love your idea of windows on the end. I have an overhang on the front of mine that I plan on leaving open for venting. What do you think about a rooftop vent? I'm debating.

I think a rooftop vent can only be a good thing but if your shed doesn't have one and you have enough other ventilation I don't know if I would go through the trouble of adding one. One of the reasons I'm buying a shed is I don't have the skills to build one and cutting holes in a roof for me would = leaks. :)

I've spent all weekend combing through the coop pictures looking for best practices. The wait to get the base shed is going to kill me. I won't be able to get it ordered until Friday then it will take two weeks. I am going to go with the double doors as it will make it more functional as a storage shed if I decide chickens aren't for me…. hey, it could happen.

Post pics of your progress! :)

Alright, here are some pics of the run in progress. Please ignore my sad shed, she'll get some new doors and some fresh paint.

My sweet Daddy is the best :)

I removed the facing from under the eave and will cover with hardware cloth. Haven't started on the inside...and the girls will be ready to move soon! Ahh!

How about you dpenning?

Looking great!

My shed gets delivered tomorrow morning then I'll start building out the inside. Keep the pics coming.

BTW, my name is Dawn. I forget I don't have that in a sig anywhere. I'm too lazy to come up with a creative name for the various forums. :)

Hello all! Just curious which would be preferred. I am converting half of a 10' x 12' shed into a coop. Need the other half of shed for storage, boo

Below are two draft layouts for the coop. It's very basic and not drawn to scale but hopefully you can get a good idea. Should I do one long roost that goes the length or two shorter/staggered roosts that goes the width (with raised poop boards)? Also food/waterer placement. I am making a PVC feeder and have a 5gallon nipple waterer. Thoughts and opinions? I know you have one

So which did you go with? I just started building out my interior today and I'm really stumped. And, I initially cut one of my poop boards only 18" deep and I see that you have yours 2'. Now I have to go search to see if I need to re-do my poop boards! I think today I will paint the floor with blackjack and do some more research while it dries. I'd love to see what you did with your interior!

Hey Dawn! I am so sorry for the late reply, it's been busy, good but busy. We decided to go with the second design. It allowed for more open space and more room for the girls to get up and down. Overall, I am extremely pleased with how it turned out. My father is a carpenter and I am a very lucky girl. We worked a long weekend to get the inside complete. The girls are loving it.

I would think the 18" deep would be just fine. That's plenty of room on each side of the roost. I just stapled vinyl to the floor and going to do shavings for the floor. Have pdz on the poop board. Works great with the kitty litter scoop! How's it coming? These things always take longer than we expect :)

Looks great! Thanks for the pics. I just painted blackjack on my floor last weekend, will likely do a second coat this weekend as I wasn't sure exactly how thick to put it on and I think I went too thin. I'll go ahead and try the 18" board since I already have it cut. I was hoping to use some leftover lumber for the whole project but I think to frame in the inside I'll need to get some heavier boards. I'm in no hurry as I haven't bought any chicks yet so it will come together slowly.

Yours looks great!

Just a note on poop board width.....I went 2 feet against the wall with roost in middle....my big roo has to sit with his face to the wall because his tail feathers hit the wall.
Also, keep roost close to board...mines 8" between roost and board and I rarely get any wall splatter.
