Help with diarrhea in dogs - UPDATE, pg. 2

If it's not a serious medical issue and just an upset tummy, canned pumpkin can often clear up the runny poo. Dogs love it, and it only takes a little bit.

Once I boarded a dog whose family was in the diplomatic corps. They had been deployed in South America somewhere. Anyway the dog was having problems with the runs when he came back stateside. The vet put him on a diet of cooked hamburger and boiled rice. Sometimes he got boiled chicken. It helped and the diet soothed his inflamed digestive tract.

Jax is fully vaccinated and on heartworm (Iverhart Plus) and flea medication (Comfortis). I know what parvo smells like, so even if he wasn't vaccinated I wouldn't suspect that. I've considered coccidia.
He had great stools before the rawhide, that's why I've made that connection.
He will be going to the vet on Tuesday, sooner if I suspect any distress. I'm watching him very carefully.
Thanks y'all.

A big helping of rawhide will frequently cause this, sounds like you're doing the right things.

Thanks. I'll have DH pick some up on his way home from work tonight.
Thanks to you also Wombat. I'll keep you updated.

I was so focused in on the rawhide that I couldn't see the forest for the trees.
I am fairly certain Jax has coccidia. During the same time that Jax was given the rawhide he was also exposed to DSD's dog. Her dogs are fully immunized (or I wouldn't have let them anywhere near Jax), but she's been slack in their routine care lately due to her own issues. Her dog did have a bowel movement the day she was here and it was runny. I asked DSD to pick it up, but knowing her she didn't get it all.
Jax will be going to the vet tomorrow or Tuesday for a fecal and meds.
He's still having episodes of diarrhea and we are giving the pepto for that. Other than the diarrhea, he's his normal boogerheaded self.

I was going to suggest a bit of canned pumpkin, but it looks like horsejody beat me to it.

Good luck at the vet, I hope it's nothing too serious.

It's possible the infection came from another dog, but it could also come from the rawhide. I've seen some digestive tract infections come from that and from pig ears (pet stores sell pig ears for chew toys too).

Unless he's loosing a lot of fluids, this too shall pass.

My dogs have had the rawhide poops more than once.

If the situation's not settled down in a couple days, though, or he can't keep fluids in, then the fecal sample is a good idea. Feeding some plain yogurt and rice mixed with food for a couple of days after a bout like this helps too.

It would not hurt to put him on canned pumpkin to "firm" him up though. I almost lost my Mastiff to a bowel obstruction in July. He was really very sick and ended up with 2 abdominal surgeries. He is well now and entered for Ocala, Fl dog shows this weekend.
We are expectiong record numbers for this show with supported entries and sweeps. If you have him vetted and the coccidia test is pos-you can make your own Albon and save some $$ but be sure to have a positive coccidia test before you start the meds.
p.m. me and I'll tell you what to get.
Good Luck Jax-feel better soon
Bridget
