Help with ducks?

Hi everyone. I hope someone can help me with a duck question. I have 2 ducks that came from a friend's kids class. Hatched from eggs so i didn't know what kind or what gender they were when I agreed to adopt them. I think I figured out they are Buff ducks. It that right? Then I ordered 2 females. I do not want fertile eggs. Can anybody tell me what sex they are? Are they quacking or is it a whispery rasp? Females quack and boys sound like they have laryngitis.

I agree they look like buffs to me. Yes they are rare but you should only breed them if you are set up for it ducklings can be a lot of work. I have a bunch of stinky butts in a brooder in my house right now.

I agree, I love my stinky butts. It is a term of endearment. But everyday I walk into my house and think, "Wow does it smell like ducks in here". And that is just with four little stinky butts in a very large brooder!

It would be different if I let a duck hatch her own, but I'm afraid that with having 20 ducks and 5 guineas that something would happen to them, so I incubate.

I don't have any buff ducks but I've heard very nice things about them. Enjoy them!

@Redhotrb Welcome to BYC!! what age are your Buffs? this is what a drake will look like when mature plus they get the drake feather at base of their back where tail meets[top of body]

Need a closer picture of their tails, I think I can see drake feathers starting but not for sure.

Thank you for responding @@Miss Lydia (don't know if I tagged you properly) ! Not sure exactly when they hatched. I got them the beginning of May and they where about the size of a pigeon. So threatened? Does that mean I should let them breed if they are a pair?

@Gray Farms I did do some more research since posting and so looked and yes 1 of them does have a curled feather on tail.

LOL and It means stinky butts but alot on enjoyment too.

@Redhotrb breeding is something that should be thought about alot before going at it. I only let my Muscovy's hatch if someone wants ducklings because it can get over whelming if you hatch ducklings and can't keep them all and no one wants to buy them. I cannot bring myself to eat or carry mine to auction. I have 2 Buff females and only way I willl bring a drake in is if the rest of my population of ducks dwindles down[Not expecting that to happen anytime soon]. My Buffs are just 11 weeks old. Don't get into the mindset that just because you have fertile eggs or your duck goes broody you have to let her hatch ducklings.. . She will be fine if she doesn't get to hatch ducklings and fertile eggs taste just like non fertile.


I should have said hatching because breeding is going to happen unless they are separated and to me that would be un duck like to not let them live together unless of course he begins to start wearing her down with feathers missing down to skin and raw skin. Not every drake is that way though.
Buffs are gorgeous ducks.
