I puchased standard blue cochins from MM Hatchery this year. One of the chicks color is splash.I'm pretty sure he is a rooster. My question is, what is a rough guess of what colors I will get out of the next generation if I cross him with a blue cochin hen ?? And what would I get if I cross him with buff cochin hens. Here is a pic of him/her. Maybe you can tell better than me what sex the splash chick is. The chick is 5 weeks old in this pic. And if this happens to be a hen what would I cross her with to get different colors?
Thanks for you help,
Tammy

I'm not sure what you would get if crossed with buffs, but here is the BBS genetic code:

Black X Black = Black
Black X Blue = 50% Black, 50% Blue
Black X Splash = Blue
Blue X Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash

He is a splash.

The blue genetics above are correct.

When breeding him with a buff, you will get 100% smutty buffs, with blue replacing the black.

I didn't know at first what color Merlin was going to be.When I got him at 2 days old he was a creamy color with smokey looking patches here and there. Now he is an off white color with a feather here and a feather there coming in slate blue.
And lilpeeps could you tell me what a smutty buff looks like?? Or if you know of a site I could look at some pics??
Thanks,
Tammy

A smutty buff is a buff with black. The black is usually seen in the wings, tails, and sometimes crests. In breeding a buff x black, you will get much more black than in a buff x buff breeding. In breeding splash x buff, it would be as though you bred buff x black, but since splash carries two copies of the blue gene, all offspring will receive one copy and the black on the birds will be replaced with blue.

Good afternoon, this is my first posting here and I'm glad I found this site. I have a beautiful partridge cochin rooster and several cochin hens. ( white, buff ,and black in color). I was wondering if anyone has any experience with breeding and colors. Even though I have had chickens for 4 years I have never bred them.
My Buff orpington hen and my white cochin hen are broodie and hatching out a cluch of eggs. I was wondering what I might expect to see for colors , also what happens when you cross a cochin and an orpington?
Thanks for any help or sites where I may find this info since a goggle search came up blank.
