Ok, i candled some of the light colored eggs that are a friends and I have one that has a hairline crack. The thing is, you can ONLY see this crack when you are candling, with the light behind it, its about day 12 for it, and its developing.
I would put wax on it, except I cant see the crack with the light ON. And its one of those jobs you need the light on to do it, for me anyhow, I didnt do so well with the wax earlier, just got it all over me and the eggs and not on the cracks.
Any suggestions, should I leave it and just watch it, or try to put glue, or attempt the wax? Hate to toss it when thereis a chick developing but not sure it will make it. Its only visible with candling.

How long is the crack? If it is very short I would leave it alone and see what happens. If it is somewhere around half the length of the egg I would try and seal it with the wax. While candling, have a pencil handy and mark the crack so you can seal it with the lights on. I hate to give up on a developing egg -but that's just me. If you try to save it let us know how it turns out.

No, its nowhere near half the length of the egg, but its like a windshield crack, where it does the one bad area and like two or three small hairlines from there, only I dont see a bad area, just the hairlines. The egg is a small one, bantam silkie/turken, its not a small crack but not real large either, medium size. So would you try to seal? Or leave it? It seems to developed fine so far...but not sure how long that will last?
Probably only takes up 1/5 or 1/6 of the egg if even that? if that tells you anthing bout size. Less than dime sized.

Thanks for the advice.

This sounds tricky. The crack sounds like a starburst. If it isn't visible from the outside by just looking under normal light , it may not be too serious -but the starburst pattern concerns me as it sounds like it may have been dropped or knocked hard. Still if it is alive and developing I wouldn't give up hope! Since you can't see the crack on the surface, you may want to skip the sealing, or you may choose to do it -sorry I can't say for sure on that. It's only day 12 or so and you have about 9 days to go. Candle every day. If you see anything scary in there like a blood ring (big, very thin, distinctive red ring inside covering a large portion) it has passed. However, if the egg continues to develope and fills up with an increasing area of darkness then the chick may still be growing. (You may or may not see movement during this latter stage, but the dark area increases with the chicks growth.) Just watch over it, turning gently same as the other eggs. Good luck!!

Thanks, mourninglory

I think I will just leave it and hope for the best. Right now I can tell its still developing, as its grown since I found the hairline crack a couple of nites ago.

I am concerned for it tho, but no the crack is not visible at all in normal lighting. We will hope for the best for the lil girl or guy!
