I have a 1 blue Ameraucana and 6 blue, black and splash Marans hens. I have a black marans rooster I'm going to use and I understand I can get olive eggers out of that mix with the 1 Ameraucana. Then I had a
moment and realized if I just went ahead and got myself an Ameraucana rooster I would be able to create (more) olive eggers with my Marans hens, and get to hatch a few Ameraucana chicks as well. Don't worry I have plenty of room to keep the boys split up, and plenty more hens for them to pay attention to.
I went on several groups (facebook) and asked if anyone had a blue or black rooster in my area. Insert headache/nightmare. First I've had to weed through people trying to pass off Easter Eggers as the real deal, whether innocent or not we will never know. Next comes the lavender/blue rooster messages for instance these are two of the messages I received: " parents I purchased as chicks were blacks. i hatched eggs this yr from them and hatched out blacks and Lavenders both" and " I have black phenotype that carries the blue genotype. All chicks come out black or lavender/blue."
which brings me to my question:
Am I correct in thinking that using a black split or lavender or any Ameraucana with lavender genes over my blue black splash girls whether it be the blue Ameraucana hen or my bbs Marans just to make olive eggers - I will be creating a genetic mess? Should I just say no thank you and pass up these roosters?
I was hoping to get one 8+ weeks or older and not have to get a bunch of chicks just to find this one rooster.
