I ordered some of the horizontal nipples to try with our new flock. I have used the vertical in the past and had leaking issues at the nipple itself. With the horizontal nipples, we can't seem to stop them from leaking (slowly) at the point where they are inserted into the container. We've tried several different types of containers and keep having the same issue. Hubby is drilling a 3/8 inch hole which I believe is what the instructions said. What could we be doing wrong? After seeing so many reviews saying "no leaks", I am a little puzzled and frustrated. I really want this to work so we can avoid the mess of regular waterers.

I've not tried these yet but plan on buying them when I get my coop built. From the reviews they seem to be good with no leaks and they're inexpensive.

Those directions are incorrect from my experience with these. Use a smaller drill bit. You want the hole big enough to get it started but not too much bigger than that depending on the softness of the plastic. For thick plastic maybe half the diameter of the widest part of the thread. For thin/soft plastic smaller than that. The tapered thread will then allow it to self seal. The 3/8 might work in PVC but that measurement doesn't apply to all applications.

Thanks, justmeinflorida. I am still hoping to be able to use the horizontal nipples since they will work better in our setup. The ones you linked to are similar to the verticals I tried before.

Thank you! I am going to try again using your suggestions.

It may also be (assuming you're reusing the same nipples in different containers) that the threads are worn out. I bet coating the threads heavily with aquarium silicone (be sure to use aquarium not household) might solve your leaking.

We used a bit just a tad smaller than 3/8" and have no leaks.
