We've got a Buff orpington... she seems to have Marek's disease. We realized about half a year ago, she was limping, being bullied by the other chickens. Another chicken died. It was bloody in the coop, so we thought it might be the other hens. This all happened days after they came outside into the coop for the first time. We had raised them from chicks. Thinking the other hens had broken her leg, we seperated her from the others in her own cage. She's been like this for some months, not getting any better but doing fine besides the limp. The other hens won't accept her... put her near the coop, and the others lunge at her. We thought it was just a broken leg, but surfing the posts here it seems like it could be Marek's. She doesn't seem to have blurry eyes. So here's my questions... Does she have Mareks, How can we help her, and how does Marek's progress?
1) What type of bird , age and weight. She's a Buff Orpington, almost a year old. Not sure about weight.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.She seems to be acting fairly normal. The only problem is she is limping and having trouble walking.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? It's been about half a year since she started exhibiting the limp.
4) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.We first thought it was broken bones, but it might be Marek's disease. her feathers also appear odd. They're sort of sticking out.
5) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.It might have been the other chickens in the coop.
6) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. She's been eating and drinking normally.
7) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. It seems normal.
8) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?Isolating her from the others is the only thing we've done.
9 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?We're not really sure.
10) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
11) Describe the housing/bedding in useWe're using wood shavings. We have her in on an old train table in our garage. It's surrounded with chicken wire, and she sleeps in an old crate.
