HELP WITH MY GOAT!!!!

sorry about your dog too. We just got rid of an aggressive dog this spring before she bit someone. took her to the humane society. What happened at your house, could have been us.

hope the doeling will be ok. poor little thing... wouldn't harm a fly.

Do you guys have an antibiotic cream called Furacin? That's what we use instead of polysporin/neosporin. We get it at Greenhawk or from our vet. It is a great product becasue it helps healing from the inside (according to our vet). I've dealt with a lot of dog bites (I have 20 sled dogs). They are very dirty and full of bacteria. We almost always put the victim on antibiotics. If you can't do the antibiotics, I would clean four times/day with bedadine solution. Slather the wound with Furacin and wrap with gauze and vet wrap. Spray the bandage with Blukote to keep the flies away. I would do that for the first 3-4 days. Then if there is no sign of infection, I would switch to 2X a day cleaning and blukote no wrap. Unless really bad, we don't use stitches on dog bites because it traps all the bacteria and infects much easier.
Logic says to dry the wound as fast as possible but with dog bites 'cause they are so dirty they should be kept moist for a few days so the bad stuff can drain. If you dry it out too soon all that bacteria is being trapped inside. (This refers to a wound that is severe enough to require stitches). I am far from being a vet this is just what seems to work for us.

Good luck with everything. I lost two baby goats to one of my dogs two years ago. It is a horrible things to have to go through. I feel terrible for you and I'll be thinking of you today.

I have been there also when a dog got my goat and I doctored her with furizone (sp) 2 x day and kept it cleaned. Dont use peroxide on it as that is bad to use on them. I would also put her on some pennicillian also for about 7 to 10 days. Do keep a dressing on it for about 4 days and then let it start air drying. I use Furall on my goats when they have places as it has a fly deterent in it, also its more drying. Yes they can die of shock so watch her closly and if her appetite drops you need to give her some Fortified B complex and some banamine for the pain. I got a bottle of Banamine from the vet...its a little pricey but you dont have to use much either. its like 1cc per 100# of goat or any other animal. I have used it for cows and horses and even my dog once. You do have to get it from the vet. My goat made it thru and she lost some movement in her leg and lost a ear from the dogs that got her when she got her head stuck in the fence. But she was a trooper and had a 1 wk old baby to nurse also. I lost her this year in birthing but she was a strong girl and most of them are. Good luck with yours.

My vet always told me to use furizone (sp) 2 x day on my horses and sheep if I had any injuries. He said Blue kote is too drying to the wound. Then we would smear Swat all around the outside of the wound but not on the actual wound to help keep flies off. Sorry about your goats getting hurt and your dog. I had a 17 year old Beagle that got hit on the head when we were robbed and he was never right after that. We finally had to euthanize him when he started snapping at us and our critters:( The furizone (sp) 2 x day on top of 99 stiches worked wonders on one of the horses after it was chased though a fence by the boarding stable's dogs and there is a very minor scar.

Hope the goats heal up great for you.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. SHe is not so great this AM - when I went out this morning she was laying flat on her side and couldn't get her right front leg under her to stand. She did show some interest in food but not anything like her normal self. All the goats were traumatized from this attack - not a single goat greeted me at the gait anxious for food. And there was no fussing/shoving to get that special morsel of food. All in all a very sad lot...the dog had also managed to get another older doeling but looks like more scratches than anything. The big goats went unharmed.

I am thinking I will bring Girlfriend in and let her live in the laundry room for a few days - do you think she will be OK by herself or should I bring Lucky in too? He is our little buckling and they are fairly bonded. Fortunately our laundry room floor is plywood so I can just throw some hay down to help absorb the mess....

If I could, I would shoot that dog again :thun

Goats have very low pain tolerance. I would put them up somewhere together and use Motrin for pain relief. As long as they are not having gastrointestinal problems from it I would keep them on it for a day or two. That way they will eat properly and be more mobile. Laying around for long periods is not good for them. I too would recommend the furacin for any wounds. I have used DMSO mixed in furacin for wounds on both goats and horses. It works great because it gives much deeper penetration into the tissues.
Good luck with your babies.

They seem to be recovering for the most part. Girlfriend is still a little stiff and sore on her right shoulder. But so far everyone's wounds look OK and they were all anxious for their food this morning

which I think is a good sign.

That's good news! Anyone that has had a deep dog bite can understand about the stiffness she is feeling. It feels like the wound is bruised deep inside.
Watch her poo and give her some probiotics if she starts having stomach problems. Sometimes shock can cause digestive problems.
Good for Her!
