Help with new chick first timer!

I have found a chick wondering alone and decided to take the baby in. It's been almost a week now and he or she is my first encounter with a chick. I have been reading all that I can on them and am trying the best I know to provide for the baby! I have bought a brooder box it's a large tote and have put down pine shavings purchased from tractor supply. Bought a feeder with chick starter and a waterer also. I've made a few little "homey" touches to try and keep my baby entertained which include a hanging cd (so baby can look into) a perching ladder made of sticks, toilet paper roll, a rock baby can jump on, tiny stuffed animal and 1 small blanket that I have noticed baby likes to sleep on. Also have a heating lamp to keep baby warm. I'm just looking for advice to keep going with raising him/her and would appreciate any that is given! I live in a large apartment but take the chick out every so often to graze and today chicky caught its first ants and loved them! Is there any signs of sadness I should look for? Am I doing a good job? Has anyone kept a chick indoors and had success? Please let me know thank you. Chick is about 3-4 weeks old now. Thank you!

Oh thank you! I just worry that chick is lonely or will get lonely and want to do everything I can!

I think you would enjoy checking out " people with house chickens." Chickens are flock animals but, only "ONE's" can be very happy as a house pet- the family becomes their surrogate flock.

Sounds like you have a good set up and are taking good care of that baby!

I have a house chicken, but she gets frequent outings into the yard. I put a pet mirror in when I have a single hatchling of any kind and they enjoy that. My girl has been an "only chicken" for quite a while now. You can raise a single chick/hen, but it requires a lot of dedication on your part. Since your chick doesn't have any buddies, you are it

My girl became more bonded to my husband and I, than with other chickens that came along, so she remained our indoor girl and never seemed to care about other hens.

As she grew, we ended up converting a large sized dog kennel/crate to create her house...with nesting box and all. But we are home a lot so she really uses it to sleep and lay her eggs. We take her outside in the yard 3 times a day...I enjoy reading or doing yard work while she ventures around. She follows us about the house and chatters to us..of course we talk to her all he time..LOL!

If you get to know your chick, this baby will let you know what it needs as it grows, My girl will tug on my pant leg when she wants to sit on my lap. She will call and pace at the door when she wants outside and she scratches her feet on the floor when she wants a treat.

If chicky is eating/drinking/pooping and active...then your baby is happy. Our girl has made a great pet and is part of our famly...eggs are a bonus for as long as she chooses to lay them
