Here's to hoping someone here might know pigeon colours! The first picture is the cock bird who's colour I am extremely interested in, for a while I assumed Dom. Opal, though he was sold to me as just a "blue" I believe. The second photo is his mate, a Recessive Red Grizzle Hen, I included another photo of the pair, since lighting is always kinda weird. They've hatched and raised two squabs, one of which is just like the mother (recessive red, most likely going to be grizzle next year) and the last photo is the second baby. I would love to know what his colour would be, or what the baby's colour would be, I am pretty sure they're blue based, but besides that its all I know. Any help appreciated, the breed is birmingham roller, if that makes any difference :)

First of all, I love the color of the baby. The color is certainly tricky and I don't have much experience with this particular color, but here is my "educated guess". Birmingham rollers come in as many colors as I can name probably so the options are wide open.

It will be easier to determine color once it molts for the first time, but as of now, I see two options. If either of them are true, it's suppoused to be a female baby, because the genes are sex-linked, the male has two copies and female only one. In any case, it looks like it has spread or t-check from mother.

First option would be that it's dun. Dun is dilluted blue, which mean that the male should carry dillute gene (it would explain the brown/gold tint on his breast). This is tricky, because dun can vary from grey to brownish.

Second option is that it's base color is brown (third and most recessive base color). The male could carry it and pass it onto his daughter making her brown.

It's possible it might be due to opal, but these are the most straightforward options, it will be easier to tell the color once it molts. In any case, very interesting bird.
