I am a brand new chicken daddy, this is my first year raising chicks. I have 10 hens about two to three weeks old, it is time to start planning the coop and run build. I have looked at many designs and partial plans but need help with a detailed plan that would include a materials list. My chicks will not free range due to the fact that I live in the middle of the woods and have various wildlife that hangs out in the back yard. My run needs to be big enough (thinking 10' x 10') so my chicks can have space. Any and all help will be appreciated.

Welcome and congrats, I'm new to this as well and been told to go bigger on the run for my birds. Currently have 6 pullets, but plan to expand to 12 next year. My run will be 12x12 not counting the area under the coops which is 60sf. What size are you considering for your hens? I've heard size of coop may be depend on location as well.

Time to start planning was about 4 months ago :D
Sorry, just reminds me of the not so common adage that I love...
Which came first the chicken or the egg?...answer is, The Coop!
Hope you have a sense of humor.

That's gonna be tough.
Most plans out there with details and mat'l lists are not well designed,
that can be devastating.
Where have you looked, and what have you found that you like?
Links would help.
How handy are you?

Probably bigger, double it if they will be confined full time.
Will the coop and run actually be in the woods?
Some pics of your build site might help here too.
Coop for 10 birds should be about 40 sq feet minimum, maybe double that too depending on your climate.

So......Welcome to BYC! @DNicholson
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

With lots of predators, and being in the woods myself, I went with a hoop run. Fully enclosed, covered with HC. Hog panels are 50" tall x 16' long.
Hoop will be 6' tall x 8' wide x however long you want it.

I've also toyed with the idea of hooking two panels together length wise, and having a run 16' wide...

Definitely go bigger on the run if you have space for it. 10x10 is big enough but at a minimal level.

Also, if you're thinking you might want more birds down the line, and you have the budget for it, you might want to build for the maximum you anticipate having. Even if you end up not getting as many birds as you thought you would, the ones you do have will sure appreciate the extra space.
