help with possible first quail pen please (: (coturnix)

Thanks :)

I have seen a couple posts here that some peoples cots will use ramps but some wont. So i guess i will put one in and put em on it a few times but if they dont seem to use it i will see if i can make it into two levels for a full second pen possibly for later if/when i add more.

I am pickin them up tuesday :) yippeeeee!
i raised California valley quail and my cage was 10 feet long 6 feet wide and three feet tall and set up 3 feet off the ground i loved that cage but with 80 to 100 quail in it i needed a big cage all it had in it was a sand box and perches and a wood floor on one end covered by hay where they would nest at and lay eggs

My family had chickens and a few turkeys growing up but i never payed a whole lot of attention to the birds themselves. Regretting it now.
But i guess i am a bit worried about them getting cold or something in tthe hutch. Lol they are little and not all furry like the rabbits.

I am gonna do just a couple things for them to be able to scurry under and a dustbath and something that they will hopefully decide to lay their eggs in.

Does anyone do the fake egg trick with quail? Put a fake egg or two in where ya want em to lay and they will see it and lay there.

out of a few hundred quail hatched here I have one hen that would lay in a nest
otherwise they lay on the run
anywhere and everywhere

Got the rabbits out of it today and put some things in for the quail. Just gotta hang the feeder and waterer and nail a small board in place at the front that will keep eggs from rolling out when i open it. The hutch is just perfectly uneven where it is that the eggs should roll forward gently.

Pickin em up tuesday :) super excited.

I just picked em up today. I had to sex them myself bc the person waits until they crow/lay to tell... well i was hoping it would be regular pharohs etc but they are tibetans and tibetan tuxedos (not much white) so they cant be chest feather sexed.. well pickles! So i grab the ones that look the biggest best healthiest.

After getting home and settin them up in their hutch i searched about byc here for vent sexing... ugh.. they are about 5wks old. So all the threads are about chick sexing or adult sexing which is simply foam-roo and no foam-hen /: but mine are not chicks.. and not old enough to be crowing or making foam so it seems.

From studying the threads and pics it seems to me best guess is i have 4 hens and 3 roos ): or all roos.... triple ugh! I am doing this for eatin eggs so i need hens hens hens hens.

Any input is super helpful!

On the plus side i found a co-op place near the tsc i was gonna go to and ends up the co-op place has 28% protien poultry/game bird feed for $15-odd for 50# :) tsc best was $18-odd for 50# and it was 22% protien.

Well a few are definitely bigger than when i got em. Still no crows that i have heard and no eggs or foam. Though i am not sure i am doing it right to get foam or not /: so time will tell i suppose.
Hoping that i have mostly hens and thats why.no crowing yet...

The tuxs seem the biggest so later if i decide to hatch out they will probably be who i hatch from.

If anyone can link some threads on genetics for the coturnix i would be super grateful :) thanks
