Anybody owns one of these types of dogs? How are they around livestock? Im thinking about getting one to put with my chickens, to help guard them. How young should they be when I put them with my chickens? There is a lady that has a few of them and they are 9 weeks old today.

Don't know about chickens but I have seen them with larger stock like sheep and cows. I've been told they are very protective of their people to the point of being aggressive, but then again I don't have personal knowlege. Just what I've been told when I was looking

Have they been raised around chickens?

This wouldn't be the breed I would think of as a protecter of chickens, but you never know.

My GD has a blueheeler/border collie mix that lives with my chickens. She has had 5 litters of puppies in the chicken yard. All these pups have gone to homes with chickens and they all say they are great with the chickens.

I happen to have pups right now that are ready to go. The father is a Great Pyrenese.

She said they havent been raised with chickens, but they have been outside with all her cats(I think she said she had 26) and around all her other animals. I was hoping that 9 weeks old was still young enough to train them and put them around the chickens and let them get use to them.

This is my first time with trying to train a dog to be around chickens, does anyone have any suggestions? Are there things I should and shouldnt do?

THIS IS MY BABY. HE IS PIT AND CAT MIX. WE DIDN'T GET OUR HENS TILL HE WAS 1 YEARS OLD. AT FIRST HE WAS LIKE YUM LUNCH BUT AFTER A FEW WEEKS OF US BRINGING HIM OVER TO THE RUN ON HIS LEASH HE DOESN'T EVEN NOTICE THEY ARE THERE. SO I IMAGINE WITH A PUPPY IT WOULD BE EASIER. JUST TAKE YOUR TIME AND STAY ON YOUR TOES AND YOU WILL BE FINE. GOOD LUCK.

Aww hes a cutie. I love the blue eyes. The one I hope to get will be silver and have blue eyes. That was my thoughts too, the younger the better. I thought about putting her in the coop with the 'big' chickens and go in there and watch over them. Maybe have her on a leash and just let her get use to being around them. I would never leave her alone with them, cause you never know. I just didnt know if there was something else I was suppose to do to.

Actually i was glad that my pups were older when i got my chicks and heres why...they know what no really means are so attached to me they dont want to be spanked for harassing the chickens and they come when called. catahoulas have a high drive to chase as they are large animal herding dogs so that might be a little hard to over come but mulitple visits daily with correction if they show too much interest will probably train your pup right. and if the chickens are calm and dont run (which is too much to ask for most of the time) the dog wont have anything to chase

I have a Catahoula and she is great around my chickens and goats. Never bothered with cows either. She knows they belong. She is very protective of me and property. She is a inside/outside dog
