Most at the clinic didn't think she had much of a chance either - the 2 punctured air sacs (you could see the blood bubbling up every time she inhaled)...but I made the argument that she had 7 other uncompromised air sacs...and she wasn't in respiratory distress...so there was a chance for it to seal up. I put her on antibiotics (injectable to make sure she got the full and proper doses) twice a day, cleaning with dilute iodine, and neosporin topical. I think she's a good example that sometimes they can pull out of injuries that you may not think possible...so if it seems right...try to give them a chance. Working in the emergency room, we have to make this call all the time...I'm happy to report that I think I made the right call this time.

look at my hen...they almost look the same!!!

Mine is a cross of something and an EE

2txmedics - You have a very pretty hen! I would be thrilled if mine turns out like her! Mine has no blue in her - I'm still think she looks more like the sweater hen...it's a toss up though. I guess right now she's either a sweater hen or an ee...

Thanks you, her name is JEWELS...she has Ee in her I get bluish eggs from her and large!

2txmedics - very cool - she definitely is a jewel! You selling any hatching eggs from her?

I think I'll call her a Sweater mix for now...later when she lays eggs I can see if she's an EE. Then, maybe she'll be a Sweater EE! LOL

Anybody have any clues about the comb issue? I'll look up fungal infections of combs and see what comes up...

I followed quarantine with each additional chicken(s) I got (not quite a full 28 days on some silkies I got, but was 3+ weeks). I lost a couple of bantam frizzles (who WERE vaccinated for Marek's at the hatchery they came from -- their COD was undetermined, possibly coccidiosis), a beautiful blue Silkie roo, and started losing OEGB BB Red bantams at anywhere from the 3-5 mo. mark. I took the last 3 who exhibited symptoms in for euthanasia & necropsy (no place to have it done here except sent to another county's state lab facility for $75, but I wanted to find out for certain what was happening.) The 3 bantams had some coccidiosis, but their main issue was Marek's; they had lesions on the nerves and in their brains. There is no treatment, and there is some disagreement as to whether or not vaccination helps older chickens, but all of mine have now been exposed, so they'll either become resistant to it or it will take them out. Either way, I'll love them and care for them, and this will be their forever home.
