I'm hoping someone here has had experience with fostering or rescuing kittens that have Feline Herpes Virus. I am fostering a litter of 6 barn cats who all have symptoms at the moment. They are about 9 weeks old now and have been to the vet to confirm and get Clavamox and an antibiotic eye drop.

All of their respiratory symptoms and eye discharge cleared up, but now we're on round 3 of eye drops and eyes crusting over. I use an eye wash and drops every 4 hours when they have symptoms, and now a few of them are getting respiratory symptoms AGAIN. Poor babies. I am also supplementing with Viralys paste that has l-lysine. Is there anything else I can do for them? Please share your experience with this virus and any words of advice.

My sweet babies:

My 7 month old had Herpes, I put 500 mg. L-Lysin from a capsule in chicken baby food (I mix 7 empty capsules into one jar of baby food), make 7 balls and lay on flat tray or cookie sheet, freeze and then keep in Baggie in freezer, give once a day defrosted, kitty eats from my hand.
Tried all the L- Lysine methods, she hated (treats, jell, powder), this was the only way to get in her. She is all better. If bacteria infection (thick crust on nose) need strong antibiotic like Zithromax (one dose cleared up infection). (Can purchase L-Lysine capsules from health store), open and put in the chicken Baby Food. REALLY WORKS!!!!!

From Pamela again ( my kitty is exotic Oriental) very expensive breed, went to vet Three times with antibiotics and eye drops with no results, if you want any more info my email is [email protected] I never thought my Athena would get better was sick for over two months. ALL better now! I keep up with 500mg a day of L-Lysine (again, the other L-Lysine methods didn't work because she wouldn't eat all her food when I put in food) my baby food method works because she loves it and gets the full 500mg a day, less won't work to keep from coming back.

Miabella, I was just coming back to update this and saw your replies I missed. Oops. Thank you for the information on the L-lysine. I am currently giving them this is paste form. I'll try the chicken baby food method, it sounds much easier.

After 3 rounds of Clavamox and eyedrops that only temporarily worked, I think I finally found a solution. I wanted to share it with you all in case you're struggling with treating FHV. I got Vetericyn from my feed store. One spray every 4 hours has been doing the trick. It is safe for eyes, nose, and mouth. I just walk up to the kittens and give them one spray in the face. Poor kitties, they hate it and it's kind of comical! It was $32 for a big bottle that will last. Much better than the $75 I just spent that worked for about a week.
