Hi everyone,

My rooster Dottie, who just turned a year on April 15, has what I assume is a swollen preen gland. Can anyone help determine what it is or how I can help cure it? Thanks in advance.

It doesn't really look swollen to me. It actually looks like it may be a doubled tip, which is a recessive genetic trait. It appears to have some debris or oil on top, so it appears to be functioning normally. He's gorgeous!! Link below on the genetic trait.

Thank you very much! I’ve never noticed it looking like that or seen anything similar online. Would you suggest cleaning around the area? I recently purchased MicrocynAH to have handy in the events or wounds or injuries.

Unless something is wrong I would just leave it alone. They pick up oil from it every time they preen to water proof their feathers. Having a bit of oil around it isn't a big deal. If you notice swelling, redness, feather quality getting poor, appearing to bother him, then you can use warm, wet compresses on it, as sometimes they can get clogged. Not super common, but it can happen. Messing with it too much might cause more problems, so best to let it do what it's supposed to on it's own.

Great, thank you so much! I can relax now haha
