A little cochin I got in trade seemed kind of small, but the last cochin chick I got was a huge, super-round fluff-ball and turned out to be a rooster, and she seemed cheery enough so I thought what the heck.
She's still super small, and at first I thought bantam, but she doesn't really seem to be developing. She seems pretty skinny--compared to every other chick I've had--and has a bald spot now on her butt (a small patch next to her vent, to the side). No blood, or cut--just bald.
I had her in with a Silkie that has greatly surpassed her in size, so I moved the silkie out yesterday thinking she may be picking on the teeny cochin.
I'm feeding her starter feed and mushed egg yolk, with plenty of water and heat and a teddy bear for company. She seems to be eating and pooping pretty normally.
But she's just soooo tiny and seems thin!

Is there anything else I can do to help?
Do I just wait it out for now?
Will bald spots fill in again?

She's about a 1-2 weeks.

Can you post a pic of her? I have a runt that just started growing the right way - she is 9 days old today. Everything about her was just tiny and I noticed yesterday that is showing growth.

If she's cheery and eating and pooping normally, I wouldn't worry yet.

. She may be a banty. If you are used to raising standard-size chicks, she may just look extra tiny in comparison. Good luck!

My chickens seem to eat less of the high protein food when I give them something else. Seems to me that maybe she doesn't like the high protein chick feed as well as the egg mush. She'll probably do better on just the high protein grower don't ya think? On the other hand maybe she won't develop as fast as the others?
My mother used to say better things come in small packages, but then she used to say alot of other things too. Most I can't repeat here.

I think at this point, from what I've looked at online, I'm guessing runt over banty because she's just not developing. She looks brand new, from size to leg feathers (which have that stripped Just Hatched look). Wouldn't banties develop normally. or are they slower?

She's going on a week and a half (did the math).

See how under-developed the leg feathers are? Has anyone ever seen that before?
(i hope she makes it. I really want a cochin).

She actually looks like she is starting to thrive. Her head is big enough but she looks like she needs a little more food. Are the others kicking her around?

I seperated her out. I got her with a silkie in trade (a cochin on my first batch was a rooster) so I only had the two of them together. The silkie is too big for her so she's moved to another brooder next to that one.
I just want chubby, fluffy chickens--is that too much to ask?

I'm glad you think she's starting to thrive! *fingers crossed*
I'll keep hoping, and keep updating. If anyone has advice or experience please share it.

I've got a runt too...

In my batch of red sussex babies that we got at one week old, one was a bit smaller than the rest. As they grew she was between one half and one third smaller than the rest. For a while it seemed like they were growing but she wasn't. I was very worried at first. Her feathers also came in much slower than the others (she was a fuzzy butt way longer than the rest!), but she seemed normal in every other way. In the early weeks she needed a bit more time sleeping and under the light than the others. But she did very slowly develop most of her feathers and moved out to the coop with them at the same time. Her behaviour is identical to the rest and no one picks on her - if anything, she's quite fiesty! She and her sisters roost on the highest roost. They are now just over 6 weeks, and I'm really curious to see whether she'll end up a small chicken, or if it evens out in the end. I just joined, so I have to figure out how to post pictures. I don't recall any bald spots but for a few weeks our baby looked pretty weird, I just offer this example to let you know it can work out for them if they aren't suffering from something else. Good luck with your baby, sounds like she has the best of care! (they grow up so fast, :awe )

That you for that hope!
For photos, I have a photobucket account -- www.photobucket.com -- and when you upload pics from your computer it gives you several display/file type options. It translates it into the proper code for webpages, forums, etc.
The type i use for this site is the </IMG> format.
