Hello! Brand new to BYC, but I’ve enjoyed learning from many of you already. I have a couple 5 week old chicks that I’m suspicious are roosters because of their combs, but maybe these combs are normal for the breed? I got two Lakeshores and they both have much bigger, more defined combs than the EEs that make up the rest of the flock. Any help would be wonderful! Thanks!

They might indeed be males, with those nice red combs. If they're males, the difference will become even more pronounced over the next few weeks.

I don't know those specific breeds, so just guessing based on general tendencies across most chicken breeds. You're right that some breeds do get bigger combs at a younger age than others, but I'm seeing such a pronounced red color that I *think* you've got males there.

Thanks for the reply! It just seemed so early to me, but they sure seem to be showing their “colors” already!
I guess they are a hybrid, but the hatchery we got them from calls them an “Idaho Lakeshore.”
Thanks again!
