Help with Sexing of Silver Laced Wyndottes

The GLW does have a single comb. All of my chicks were sexed as pullets, so maybe that 10% margin of error is in effect with the SLW! My son will be upset if "she" is a "he". He has claimed her for his own! Thanks for offering to post pics. I know they will help several of us out there!

BTW, sorry for hijaking the thread!

Well, I hope for your and your son's sake that I'm wrong.

I had 6 SLW from a breeder that I unfortunately lost to predators (yay for neighbors who don't take care of their dogs...). At 8 weeks, there was a noticable difference in the roos and pullets. All of the roos had very red combs, and the feathering was looking different.

I currently have a set of 9 five-week old BLRW and Blue Wyandottes, and with the exception of one bird, they are all pretty pink. They were straight run from a breeder. He said that sometimes it's harder to tell with this variety who will be what based solely on comb color. I also have 9 Blue's that are a week old, and their feathering is starting to come in, but nothing yet.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that I could definitely tell with the SLW who was who, but I'm having trouble with the BLRW and BW.

From what I saw with my birds, It looks like this to me:

A: Roo
B: 1 pullet, 2 roos
C: Facing, Roo
D - G: Roos

But, that is only from my experience with 1 batch of SLW. My batch was from a breeder, and I've read on the forum that sometimes breeder v.s. hatchery SLW look a little different. I hope you get some more Pullets. I am in the same boat now and I'm going "UGH! Statistics are 50/50, why does it look like I have 7 Roos and 2 Pullets?!?!?".

Edited to add:

Can a chick have a cleft palate? I have one roo? who has one messed up upper beak...named him Floyd?

I just saw this. I had one of my BLRW that had a funny looking beak (kind of off to one side, not like a crossed beak, but like a skeletal deformity). I got some great info from the breeder as well as Katy

. I planned on letting her ride it out, but eventually she kind of stopped eating properly. She didn't seem like she was going to make it, so we had to cull her. If you post pictures of your bird's beak, I'm sure you'll get some helpful tips on what it could be!

OK, THANKS....I bought 13 chicks, one died on day two....(back in Feb) so now I have 12 and I am thinking 9 roos and 3 pullets....not quite 50/50

I will see if I can get a good pic of Floyd and his messy beak....

I will put some of my Roos....on www.craigslist.com and or give them away here to anyone who will take them....might need to keep poor Floyd???
