I recently got a beautiful Blue Silkie rooster and want to know what color offspring he will produce if bred with A- Partridge B- White? Anyone know? I know if you breed blue to blue you get splash... but I don't really know anything else! LOL! I love my roo, and my partridge pullets have a lot of blue in them, so I think it would be possible that they could throw some blue chicks. What is proper? Is there anywhere I can read about proper color breeding? I have looked, but the only link I found was so complex I could not follow it.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Working with the Blue gene in poultry is somewhat complicated, but easier than you think.

In Silkies, it works like this:

Black x Black = 100% Black

Black x Blue = 50% Black, 50% Blue

Blue x Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black and 25% Splash

Splash x Black = 100% Blue

Splash x Blue = 50% Splash and 50% Blue

Splash x Splash = 100% Splash

Breeding your Blue bird to a White bird is a crapshoot, as it will depend on what the White bird has under the White gene. Until you hatch some chicks form the combo, you won't know what you'll get.

I personally wouldn't breed to the Partridge bird, but that's just me. If I were you I'd look for either some Blue or Black birds to breed my Blue cock bird to.

Thanks for the information! I had hoped to get some blue Silkie hatching eggs, but it did not work out as the hens just weren't laying well. I ended up getting the rooster instead. I am very happy with him though. Maybe someday I can get some quality blue/black hatching eggs.
