Help with Waterers

I am trying to locate replacement waterers. I had in my flock the plastic 3 gallon with the black lid and red bottom from tractor supply co(Farm-Tuff Top Fill Poultry Waterer). I have had the worst luck with these new ones. I have gone through three so far and they do not seal right. They just keep leaking. So I need some help. I am looking for either metal or plastic large enough for 10 hens. Please advise what type works for you. I am not looking for nipples just stand waterers.

I'm curious as to why you don't want the nipple waterers?????

I use a plastic bucket with the horizontal water nipples...best thing I ever did! Don't have to clean up filthy waterers and refill every day! Here's a few pics to give you a better idea:





You can get them online and they are inexpensive. You drill a 3/8" hole in your bucket about 1-1/2 - 2" up from the bottom and screw them in. They are self-tappers and they don't leak! Just make sure you screw them in straight. Also, make sure you only "snap" your lid down in 1-2 clicks...there has to be air or they won't release the water.

NOTE: Buy the horizontal nipples like shown, not the vertical ones...why? Because they tend to leak some.

I have a small flock of 4 ladies and I use a 2-1/2 gallon bucket (but you'd want to use a 5 gallon one I'm sure) and I only clean and replace water about every 4-5 days even in this heat! Another thing...I, too, live in snow country and I'll be using a small low-watt 250 stock tank heater so the water doesn't freeze....best of both worlds!

I agree completely with iwiw60! Best move I ever made was going with horizontal nipple waterers. They don't leak, water stays clean, and they are not that expensive. I bought a package of 10 and I've got 5 of them screwed into the lower side of a 5 gallon bucket from Lowes with 5 in reserve. We drilled a small "tap hole" in the lid of the bucket. No issues whatsoever.

I started out with the vertical nipples in a smaller bucket but those do leak when the chickens drink. I put it away, planning to use it for chicks, but after a near disaster when we left town for over a week and the 5 gal was close to dry (each daughter thought the other was filling it) I put the little one back in the coop. That way if the main waterer ever goes dry again (and after last time I doubt that will ever happen again) they have an alternate source. My husband is very active in a fraternity and we travel a lot for that, so the peace of mind when we leave town is well worth it. Most of our trips are for 2 or 3 days, so I can fill it the morning we leave and they do fine. The girls learned their lesson and check it regularly now, and haven't had to do much but top it off with a little cold, fresh water by the 3rd day.

I use a 5 gallon galvanized waterer - double wall gravity. I have 20 bantams and this will usually last three days. To help keep it clean I raised it about 2" off thethe ground on top of some scrap boards. I like the simplicity. Just fill and go.

I'm using one of those Farm Tuff waterer and hate it. Had two of them a guy sold me for $5. Threw one against the wall and broke it cause it leaked so bad. Right now I'm having to use the other one and fill it often. Gonna get some of those horizontal nipples and make me a waterer like shown.

We also use the nipples and have a hose out the side of the coop. Love them. No mess!
