HELP!!! Woke up to 1 baby quail

If I could figue out to load pix that would e easier . It is just a styrofoam incubator I boght from our feed store that you set the temp that you want it tostay at and it turns itself on and off when it gets to the right temp.
Was also thinking of taking that lid with the heater and putting it over a 10 gal fish tank, just don't have a fish tank so I thought I would use this since it can also hatch eggs it should work then the little guy won't also be under heat just in heat if that makes any sense.

Hi Patty,
That's what I thought. It sounds like my incubator.

I honestly don't think either way is going to work. (as a brooder or over a tank)

The chicks need to be in something with heat only at one end. Like the ones shown in the link I gave you. They need to be able to move away from the heat if hot, back to it if cool.
Also if using an incubator as a brooder their water will be hot!

To load a picture, you need to upload them to a free pic. hosting site. I use Photobucket. Then just copy and past the img. link right here in the text box where you want the pic to be.

Is it similar to this?

That is an early quail? do you have a couple thermometers in the incubator. Are the temps high at all?

I cracked up about the mirror! Poor little guy probably thought he saw a ghost!

But as for the brooder, I would put him in a usps box with a desk lamp to keep warm if you don' t have a brooder handy for one booger. For small hatches I use the boxes or fish tanks if those are handy.

The Critter Place is correct! After they are hatched they need heat, but also need cool places to go to. Putting him in a place that is constant heat would kill him too. Even a plastic tote box with a lamp over ONE end would work until you got a better setup completed. When they are chilly, they go under the light, when they are too hot, they need to be able to move out of the heat. This also acclimates them as they grow older with feathers to no heat at all.

This is a photo of my late hatchers...they're too small to put with the rest of their hatch mates in the big brooder. But It gives you an idea of what I'm talking about.

edited to say that is only a 40watt bulb but it keeps them toasty. They still can escape the heat, and do, when needed.

Thanks for all the information and next time I only have 1 bird I am really having my camera around when I put the mirror in that was to funny not to do again

So can you tell me if the others one hatch on Haloween can I out them all together since now these 2 will be a wk older? I sure hope they hatch if not I don't think I can order eggs again, it's to hard waiting for them to hatch and then to have some that don't

I have put new ones out the hatcher with some as old a 2 weeks. Need to make sure the younger ones are running around well & watch them closely at first. I have also put a little divider in to keep them apart until the younger ones get a little bigger & the older ones get to know the smaller ones. There is always a risk of them getting picked on...

You should be able to put them together. The little one may be a bit on the ornery side though
