HELP!!!! Worms???

@Harestad Farm , Welome to BYC! Looks like you have large roundworms. If you're in the US there are several de-wormers you could try.

  • Wazine (treats only roundworms)
  • Safeguard liquid (treats many worms, but has to be given several days in a row)
  • Valbazen (can be given once except for gapes, but you don't have gapes)
what is the dosage and withdrawal for these?? I went to the feed store and they had all 3 but only the Wazine said to use for chickens, BUT that said dont use on laying hens... does this mean I cant use it ever if we want to eat the eggs ever, or just dont eat the eggs while using?? Id rather treat for all worms though.. thanks for your help

I've never had to treat for worms, so can't advise. Someone should be along who can answer. And a lot of people use the paste that comes in a tube that is meant for goats. I have no idea what the med name is.

Dose and withdrawal depend on what product you use and how much you give.

Roundworms only - Wazine (piperazine). In Canada piperazine has a zero day egg withdrawal, but it's not labeled for use in laying hens here in the US, so most people wait two weeks past the last treatment. Treat once, repeat in 10-14 days. Can be given orally or in drinking water.

Valbazen (albendazole) - will treat all worms except tapes. Dose is 0.8 ml per pound of body weight orally. Repeat in 10-14 days. Gapeworms require treatment for 3-5 consecutive days. Most people wait two weeks before eating eggs.

Safeguard or Panacur (10% fenbendazole liquid or paste) - Will treat all worms except tapes, but must be given 5 days in a row for gapeworms and capillary worms. Dose is 0.23 ml per pound of body weight five days in a row. Most people wait two weeks before eating eggs.

Wormout Gel (oxfendazole and praziquantel) - Treats all worms including tapes and it can be given in water. Dose is 47 ml per gallon for two days. Repeat in 10-14 days. Egg withdrawal is probably no less than two weeks.

Most stores don't carry Valbazen and Wormout Gel, so you would have to order them. I think if I were you I would treat with Wazine now, repeat in 10-14 days, then look into having some poop tested at a later date to see if you still have worms.

If you decide to get Safeguard, get the liquid because it's much cheaper. One bottle of liquid = 125 ml, five tubes of paste = 125 ml.

found this in my coop run this morning... Ive been struggling with these chickens from the beginniing with their poop... First completely bloody feces (not just intestine lining), got that cleared up with corrid. then diarrhea, but got that cleared up with corrid and a supplement, then their poop some days looking like cooked hamburger meat in grease then back to normal, then backed to the hamburger meat greasey looking poop... NOW THIS!!! am I tripping?? I feed them organic layer feed, no more treats. my pen is as dry as possible hear in seattle as there is no more standing water in the pen since i spread wood chips down. we give them a lot of fresh water from multiple sources.... I just dont know what to do. and any local vet will only do fecel sample test with an exam of the infected chicken... well i dont know which chicken is doing it ... this photo is below their favorite spot. i clean this poop daily/ or every other depending of my schedule. i have 6 laying hens and a rooster

My chickens used to have worms, but I went to my local feed store and bought worm treatment and added it to their drinking water once a month til the worms went away. And I've never had any trouble with any kind of worms since.

If you saw worms they were large roundworms, and the de-wormer you used was probably Wazine (piperazine). The only way to know for sure whether or not you have worms is to do routine fecals tests.

I did. And chickens are now worm free. A couple years have passed since I had to treat for worms.
