My hen, Larry, is dead. My family is indifferent. I am heart broken. I am not cut out for this. Two dead hens in 5 months. If I was one of my remaining 4 hens, I'd make a run for it.

Awww Michele, I'm so sorry. CRUD. Poor Larry.I was hoping she'd recover....
That she was lethargic for 2 weeks is a really long time in chickendom.....seems like with chickens, early intervention is the only hope. If only the root of their troubles wasn't so mysterious so much of the time....CRUD CRUD CRUD.

I think I'm about to lose my fourth hen to internal laying and it breaks my heart, especially because, short of expensive surgery, there's nothing that can be done. It's heartwrenching sometimes, this chicken-keeping.
When I was young, my grandmother used to tell me stories of chickens running in the yard, collecting eggs and especially the story about her favorite hen. I don't remember hearing about all this heartache! Maybe they were more rationale at that time. Maybe they were food- not pets?
It's pretty likely that your grandmother had heartache with her hens but didn't expose you to it because you were a child.
I'm so sorry to hear about Larry. You did the right things by her. You're not a threat to your girls and they're in good hands. Keep at it & we'll all be here to support you.
