hi! I'm so new to the chicken life! I have a Rhode Island Red that's been sitting on eggs for nearly 6 weeks

I have tested them and there were three left that were viable. I thought she had gone off her rocker and hadn't checked her in a couple days and tonight i went out and found a fluffy dry gray chick sitting next to her! I'm torn because I don't know if I need to take her out and put her under a heat lamp with food and water and see if the others hatch or if I should leave her with mom and hope that she gets why she needs? I candled the remaining eggs and they still look good but not ready still, so I'm afraid I'll lose the live one! I'd hate it after all this time

BUT if I do separate her she'll be all alone so is that any better? Please all advice welcome!!

Please take her out and put her under a heat lamp. It sounds crazy, it takes about 21 days for eggs to hatch, why is mama sitting for 6 weeks. Other hens must have been adding eggs to her nest that were fresher. Whatever, what a great surprise to have one viable chick at least.

She will be fine alone - give her a little stuffed toy to cuddle with and a small mirror, so she thinks there is another chick with her. Just be sure she eats & drinks. If you tap on the dishes she will go to them. Make sure there is room in the brooder for her to get away from the heat lamp if it seems too hot for her.

Welcome and Congratulations on your new baby chick. Hope you do get more.

Thank you so much for the tips!!! Momma is caring for her well today so I've decided to candle the two last eggs this evening and see if they can be thrown out! She is eating and drinking and pooping and hides under mommas wing when I check on them! I'm so excited that she's caring for her! She definitely had fresh eggs under her before because I found new fresh ones this morning! Weird! Anyways hopefully it will continue to grow and do well!

So sweet, would love to see a pic. The ones in threads with mom and chick are always priceless. You may consider adding to the calendar contest?

Good luck on those other eggs.

Thank you Sunflour! They are doing so well! The other eggs never hatched so we only have the one chick but that's ok! She is a hen

I love watching them together! Ill attach a pic of them! They are free ranging now but in the pic they were hanging out under the coop. How do I enter the calendar contest?
