I just went out to check my chickens. One is laying on the ground gasping for air. I picked her up and there's liquid coming out of her mouth. What's wrong? What do I do?! She doesn't look like she's going to make it.

Sour crop? Is her crop distended and watery...like a water balloon? If so, she can be held upside down, neck outstretched and pressure put on her crop to empty it. You must do this in short bursts to prevent her aspirating any of the liquid. More to follow.....

She died I picked her up to bring her in the house and a bunch of liquid cane out of her mouth. Then her eyes rolled back and she died while I was holding her. I would still really like any information. I would like to be able to prevent this from happening again.

I am so, so sorry for your loss hon. Sour crop COULD have been the cause. There is bound to be a lot of info on it on here if you do a search. Big hugs xx

It sounds to me like she may have been in the “throes of death,” which can include thrashing, twisting of the neck, and liquid coming from the beak. You may try opening her body to look for a possible cause by examining her organs. Look at her crop, inside of the gizzard, intestines, look for fluid in the abdomen, a stuck egg, and color of her liver.

Otherwise, you can refrigerate her body, and ship or take it on ice packs to the state vet or poultry lab for a necropsy. Sorry for your loss.

No wounds. No sign of anything in her beak. Her comb was turning dark. It was terrible and so quick. I only have 6 chickens so I know she just laid an egg yesterday. Thanks for all your thoughts and kind words
