HELP!

I would say it partially depends on the season. For example, in the summer, they don't need near as much food because they have plants and bugs to eat if you let them free range. In the winter though, they tend to eat a lot more.

It also depends on what kind of feed you get. We only buy organic feed (Nature's Best and Dumor), which is more expensive. We deem it worth it though, because it keeps the chickens healthier, their eggs healthier, and us healthier.

One bag of Nature's Best organic chick starter (which is what you need when they are young) costs about $26.00. One bag of Dumor organic layer pellets (what we used for our hens of laying age) costs about $23.00 with tax. When you have the baby chicks, they won't eat very fast at all and one bag of chick starter will last you a while. These bags are about 40 lbs.

We have 63 chickens. We have them at different ages (some babies, some teenagers, and some adults), so we currently need chick starter and layer pellets on hand. They consume, on average, about 3 40lb bags of food per week (approx. $60)-- in the winter. But that's a lot more chickens than you are talking about.

And then, you have the debate where you could get layer pellets, OR, you can continuously feed them chick starter AND supplement them with calcium (i.e., egg shells, oyster shells, etc.).

For just 10 chickens, I would think they might not even eat a whole bag a week, depending on season. So it wouldn't be very much either way. If @SonoranChick says a 50 lb bag lasts 10 chickens a month, you'd probably get away with one bag of organic feed a month, about $22-26 depending on what kind.

Yes, non-organic feed is a LOT cheaper. However, the pesticides and GMOs in the long run can make your chickens have health problems. Again, lots of people use it and never have a problem-- that's just not our preferred option.

I hope this helps you :)

We are hoping to get into growing the majority of our chicken feed come this spring and summer so that we don't need to buy it from the store!
